A 23-year-old Sophia man who allegedly had 65.8 grammes of cannabis in his possession was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that on October 3 at Kurishu Backdam, Cuyuni River in the Essequibo district, Michael Pattour had in his possession 60.7 grammes of cannabis along with 5.1 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The man told the court: “The substance was not found in my possession, Your Worship, but in a camp which was occupied by several other people. The police just acted on information of people telling them that the substance is mine.”
Pattour was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him.
In presenting the facts, Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai told the court that on the day in question the police acting on information went to a camp located at the Kurishu Backdam where a search was conducted on the accused. He said that at time the defendant was wearing a blue pouch in which the narcotics were discovered and he was taken to the police station and the narcotics was weighed in his presence.
After stating the facts the prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that no special circumstance was presented to the court. The accused was remanded and the matter was transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court for December 19.
