2-0,2-0,2-0 Though it resembles some sort of mathematical equation, these numbers actually represent the final scores of the Barbados senior men’s football team during their ongoing but now-collapsing 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in CONCACAF’s Group B.
In early September, the Tridents were handed their first 2-0 defeat by Guyana on the South American continent, before Trinidad & Tobago journeyed to Bridgetown and completed the same result with the identical scoreline.
Yesterday at the National Stadium was no different, as Guyana recorded yet another 2-0 victory and crushed the already small glimmer of hope that Barbados had of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
It was the fourth loss to Guyana for the year, the second of the qualifying campaign, and Barbados’ third straight defeat in 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
With just three matches remaining – one against the Soca Warriors in Port of Spain on October 11th, and two against Bermuda on November 11th and 15th – Barbados’ chances of advancing out of the group are now simply non-existent.
“I take full responsibility for the defeat,” said a visibly disconcerted Colin ‘Potato’ Forde, head coach of the Barbados squad.
“We played a very good game until we conceded the first goal. We created a number of chances and it was a much-improved performance from the previous games. The only thing we did not do was score goals.”
Forde was unpredictable in his final team selection, and opted to start teenage striker Diquan Adamson and Tristan ‘Fishy’ Parris up front.
“When I was appointed head coach, I recognised that it was not going to be an easy task. If they (BFA) want short-term results and at the moment the results are not coming, they will then make their decision. But at the moment, I don’t see a reason why I should resign.” (Barbados Advocate)
