Digicel has pumped thousands of dollars into the preparation of Guyana’s team for their participation at the upcoming Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) in Suriname.
The competition starts in another two weeks and team manager Chris Bowman said the support of the phone company was critical in their preparation.
“To sustain two months of training at the highest level is very costly and that is where Digicel has been very supportive and we are very confident that we have put together the best team and we are looking forward to Inter-Guiana games this year.”
Bowman said the team is made up mostly of players from Berbice, Linden and Kawkwani. Only one player is from Georgetown.
The team, which has been in training since July, was selected from a pool of thirty players, who were involved in a 10-day training camp following the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF).
“Following that we took a tour to Kawkwani for about four days, since then we have been engaged in a sustained training regimen without break”.
He said that through the sponsorship they were able to provide the players with accommodation, transportation, meals and other needs of the players.
Transportation to the games, Bowman said is being looked after by the Government. Guyana leaves for Suriname on the 19th.
