A 29-year-old man who allegedly stole two cell phones valued a total of $215,000 from another man in a Main Street restaurant was yesterday placed on $100,000 bail after he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on October 9 at Main Street, Georgetown, Travis Roberts stole two cell phones valued $215,000, property of Parmanand Samaroo.
The man was not required to plead to the charge when it was read to him.
In presenting the facts Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question around 19:30 hrs the VC and his family were at the New Thriving Restaurant. He said the VC was at the cashier paying his bill and while doing so he placed his cell phones on the counter but he forgot them there and left.
The cashier subsequently informed the security that someone had forgotten the phones on the counter. While returning she noticed the accused picking up the phones and when questioned he said they were his, Harvey stated. The prosecutor further said that the VC returned to uplift his phones and was informed by the cashier what had occurred. The matter was reported to the police station and an investigation was launched.
Harvey related that the police officers who went to the home of the accused discovered the phones there and he was subsequently charged.
After stating the facts the prosecution had no objection to bail but asked that it be granted at a substantial sum to ensure that the defendant returns to court.
The matter was adjourned until November 11 and was transferred to Court One.
