(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – Kaloti Jewellery Group, which is headquartered in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, will assist Suriname in setting up an own mint house. Yesterday, President Desi Bouterse mentioned an agreement that has been signed between the State and the company. In his annual address, the President already mentioned the government’s plans to set up its own mint house. Suriname wants to get more out of the gold sector by producing processed gold. A mint house makes coins for circulation and coins from precious metals, among other things. This yields much more than selling unprocessed gold. Kaloti and Canadian Royal Mint were in the running for setting up the mint house, given the interests of both companies in Suriname. Canadian Royal Mint purchases gold from Rosebel Goldmines and Kaloti purchases most of the gold produced by small-scale miners.
