On ice: This freezer has been sitting in the Port Kaituma morgue for months and is yet to be installed much to the disappointment of residents who described the situation as unfair. Resident Richard Allen told Stabroek News earlier this week that although many complaints have been made about the facility the “region has decided not to complete it and the condition of the place is deplorable”. He noted that bodies are still being stored in a wooden box, a stone’s throw away from the uninstalled freezer and are often damaged by rats. The last victim he said was Ralph Gouveia who died by drowning last week. According to Allen because of the situation, the body began to decompose. Contacted, Nigel Fisher, the acting Regional Executive Officer (REO) admitted that the freezer is uninstalled explaining that an external cooling component has to be installed. This missing component has apparently caused a delay in the installation of the freezer. Residents had said that preserving bodies at the morgue is expensive as they have to buy thousands of dollars worth of ice to put on them. The morgue was constructed in 2004.
