(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – Illegal migration between Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and Brazil can only be tackled by consultations and close cooperation. Not one country benefits from illegal migration. French Ambassador Joël Godeau made these statements yesterday morning at the opening of a three-day seminar on a coordinated approach to illegal migration in the Guyana Shield.
An illegal migrant need not be a criminal at all, but according to the diplomat, it is well-known that illegal migration is a threat to the economy and welfare of countries.
Often, illegal migration creates a mafia-like atmosphere in countries because victims are exploited and exposed to extortion and disease.
“That is why joint action is necessary”, Ambassador Godeau said. He also pointed out that illegal migration can be tackled not only with repressive measures. Human rights should also be considered in tackling this issue.
