Renovation works continue at the Norman Singh Race Track with the double-decker grand stand getting a facelift for next Sunday’s Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club/Shariff Racing Stable horse race meet at the club’s facility at No. 6, Bel Air, West Coast Berbice.
Apart from that, the track is currently being re-laid and there will be the installation of new rails and toilet facilities, according to a release from the organisers of the event.
Additionally, some of the distances for the races have been changed in the lucrative $8M meet.
The release said also that entries have been pouring in, with a closing date set for October 18 at the club’s office. The race meet will be held under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) and prospective competitors can also register their horses through Mohammed Shariff on telephone number 611-0684; Ghansham Singh on 600-3626/649-3636 and Compton Sancho on 690-0569.
The nine-race card has seen the feature B and Lower Class event adjusted from 1800m to 1200m while the distance for the three-year-old horses bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies has also been trimmed from 1400m to 1200m.
The feature race will see horses vying for the top prize of $1.2M and a trophy in the $2.3M event. The three-year-old race has a first prize of $800,000 over a distance of 1200m while the horses in the E and F Class division will battle for a $600,000 first prize and trophy over 1100m.
There will also be two two-year-old events: the race for two-year-old West Indies bred horses over 1100m and the two-year-old Guyana bred horse race over the same distance. The West Indies bred horses have a billing of $400,000 and a trophy while the locally bred horses will run for $250,000 and a trophy.
The G1 and Lower race, also over 1100m, also has a first prize of $250,000 and trophy; I1 and Lower 1400m race has a winning purse of $180,000; I-3 to three-year-olds with one win will run a distance of 1100m for a first prize of $160,000 and the final race on the card is for horses classified as Division One, Two and Three (J,K and L) and will take to the track for $120,000 over a distance of 1100m.
