Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday remanded a mechanic when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer the charge of attempted murder allegedly committed at the East La Penitence Night Shelter.
The court was told that the accused Luke Latiff and the Virtual Complainant (VC) Andrew Anthony are both residents at the East La Penitence Night Shelter. On October 9 the VC was getting ready to go to work when the defendant had just finished smoking. Anthony spoke to Latiff and the defendant became annoyed and allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed the VC in the chest.
The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge. Police reports stated that the VC is currently hospitalized but according to the defendant the VC was seen drinking at a shop.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant has no fixed place of abode and as a result of the incident he was removed from the night shelter and if he is granted bail it is likely that he will not return for trial.
The man was subsequently remanded and the matter was transferred to Court Five where he will make his next appearance on October 28.
