The Guyanese athletes got a chance to size up their competitors when the opening ceremony of the 2011 Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) was held at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium in Suriname yesterday.
After the march past, the hoisting of the three flags and the playing of the national anthems, the various delegation heads took to the podium to deliver their speeches.
Head of the French delegation, Laurence Burg took to the podium first, delivering an inspiring speech where she wished the athletes well while thanking Suriname for their hospitality.
“It’s great to be a part of the IGG Games, so I would like to thank Suriname for their hospitality. We should use this opportunity to overcome challenges as it brings about unity and development in the youth which supports personal growth along with better health.
“It creates values for personal growth and room for social success; it also crystallizes special moments and strengthens bonds between our young people… so athletes handle yourselves as ambassadors for the world. Finally we give life to the values of courage, respect and hard work… best wishes and good luck to all,” Burg concluded.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar then delivered his speech in which he thanked and applauded the Surinamese for their hospitably and ability to organize the games.
Kumar’s speech also garnered applause from his countrymen as he wished the athletes well. “To the athletes play and enjoy the games but to the Guyanese I say play and win.”
Paul Abena, Suriname Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, highlighted the fact that the sports is not only to bring the youths together but to bring together the cultures as well. He declared the sports open.
Guyana will participate in Volleyball, Basketball and Football today when the IGG Games continue.
