Bartender Robbie Partab was yesterday charged with reaching into a customer’s pocket and stealing his cell phone.
Partab was placed on $10,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he denied the charge.
The allegation is that on October 18, at Robb Street, Georgetown, Partab stole an $8,000 cellular phone from Ivon Fraser.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that Fraser was at a bar when Partab approached him and took his liquor. Partab allegedly then asked Fraser to borrow his phone so that he could make a call, but the man refused. Partab then allegedly pushed his hands into Fraser’s pocket and then left with the phone. Fraser made a report to police and Partab was later arrested and charged.
Partab, however, told the court that he had his own phone in his possession when the police arrested him.
He was initially granted bail in the sum of $25,000 but managed to get a reduction after pleading with the Magistrate. “I had a funeral expense… I live alone and I can’t afford to pay the required bail,” he said.
The matter was adjourned until October 24, when it will be called again at Court 10.
