A mechanic was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with stealing two motorbikes.
Andre Williams, 27, was arraigned before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on two counts of simple larceny.
The court was told that on October 2, at Middle Road, La Penitence, he allegedly stole a motor cycle, valued $185,000, from Obasango Griffith. It was further alleged that on October 17, at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, he stole another motor cycle, valued $400,000, from of Colin Forrester.
Williams pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Police Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that Griffith parked his motorcycle in his yard under his house, which is completely fenced.
He later made checks during the night and discovered that the bike was missing and he made a report to the police. Harvey said that Griffith made inquiries into the theft and based on the information received, he went to West La Penitence, where he saw Williams cleaning the bike.
The police were subsequently called and Williams was arrested.
In relation to the second charge, Harvey said Forrester parked his motorcycle under his house and went to bed. On the following day, he discovered the bike missing. Harvey said Forrester later saw the accused riding the said bike in the Albouystown area and he caught a taxi and followed him.
He added that Forrester subsequently confronted Williams, who jumped off the bike and ran away. Forrester later made a report to the police station and Williams was arrested and charged for the offence.
When given a chance to speak, the accused said he was given the bike to repair.
Harvey, however, said that Williams had other pending matters of a similar nature before the court and objected to bail on the ground that it is likely that he would not return to court if let go.
As a result, Williams was remanded until October 24.
