The Cavalier Sports and Tour Club, the main promoters of race walking in Guyana, is hosting its annual race walking fiesta tomorrow at Soesdyke.
The race starts at 6.30am outside of Harry’s Photo Studio, Back Road, Soesdyke with a 10-kilometre race walk around the community, ending at the Studio. There will also be 10-race walk sprints at the same venue with trophies and medals up for grabs. The event is open to male and female (seniors), juniors, veterans and differently-abled participants.
National race walk champion Rudolph Mitchell, who has chalked up an amazing 117 consecutive wins, will be participating in the event to continue his winning streak. The Lindener is expected to face opposition from his rivals and a host of newcomers from around Guyana.
Coordinator of the Club Olga Henry said the fiesta aims to have more persons participate in the sport both competitively and recreationally in an effort to develop it countrywide. Harry is appealing to the state, the corporate community and sports loving individuals to support the activity with donations of cash, trophies, medals, water and other prizes. Interested persons can contact the Club’s headquarters at 222 Back Road, Soesdyke or telephone numbers 654-4113 or 261-6649.
