A 23-year-old conductor who pleaded guilty to wounding the driver of the minibus he was conducting and damaging the man’s spectacles was yesterday fined $40,000 after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine–Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The court was told that on August 27 at Croal Street, Abdul Bennette unlawfully damaged a pair of spectacles valued $40,000, property of Wesley Kilkenny.
On the same day also the accused unlawfully and maliciously wounded the said Virtual Complainant (VC).
The accused pleaded guilty to the offences and while apologizing offered to compensate the VC: “I am very sorry for damaging the man’s spectacles… I am willing to compensate him for the damage that I have caused.”
In narrating the facts Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that the two parties were operating a minibus together. On the day in question the minibus stopped at Croal Street and the conductor handed the fares collected to the driver of the vehicle but a heated argument arose because the money was incorrect. As the confrontation became intense the defendant dealt the VC several cuffs which resulted in injuries to Kilkenny. The matter was reported and the accused was later charged.
