Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday remanded a 39-year-old man who allegedly attacked his reputed wife with a cutlass.
The court was told that on October 3 at Georgetown Kennard Bob of Lot 15 D’Urban Backlands unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm to Catherine Hughes.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
According to the facts presented to the court by Prosecutor Lionel Harvey, Hughes is Bob’s reputed wife and the couple has been living together for the past 10 years. On the day in question they had an argument and the accused picked up a cutlass but the VC held onto it and as the defendant pulled it away the woman sustained cuts to her fingers.
The prosecution objected to bail stating that this is not the first time that the accused had abused his partner and he also took into consideration that injuries were inflicted on the VC.
The magistrate ruled in favour of the application made by the prosecution and the defendant was remanded to prison. The matter was transferred to Court Two.
