Guyana’s track and field athletes failed to advance past the first round when competition at the XVI Pan American games continued in Guadalajara, Mexico on Monday.
According to Chef-de-Mission, Noel Adonis, track and field athletes Lee Prowell, Adam Harris and Winston George were all eliminated from their respective disciplines.
Prowell and Harris competed in the 100m event and both athletes failed to reach the semi-finals.
According to Adonis both Prowell and Harris placed fifth in their heats with times of 10.65 seconds and 10.62 seconds respectively.
George, who made his 400m debut at the Games, finished fourth in his heat in a time of 46.93 seconds, narrowly missing the finals which were to be contested yesterday.
George and Harris are scheduled to compete in the 200m today.
Jamaican Lerone Clarke was the winner of Tuesday’s 100m final winning the event in a time of 10.01 seconds ahead of Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis (10.04 seconds) and Emmanuel Callender of T&T (10.06.) respectively.
Collins was the favourite as he had earlier established a new Pan American Games record of 10.00 seconds in the 100m, replacing Churandy Martina’s time of 10:06 set in 2007 in Rio de Janeiro.
Adonis also reported that the Rugby contingent continues to prepare for competition on Saturday and Sunday under the watchful eyes of Coach Spencer Robinson and Assistant Coach Theodore Henry.
Adonis said that the team suffered a setback in the form of a recurring injury to Dominic Lespierre, one of the more experienced players in the side, but they have remained undaunted in their quest for Pan American history and glory at these Games.
The swimming, squash and taekwondo contingents have departed the Games Village and have been replaced by the athletics and rugby delegations.
