An apocalyptic vision run amok

Dear Editor,

We are shocked that PPP/C government officials (namely, Ms Teixeira and Dr Prem Misir) are raising the spectres of one of the most horrific human tragedies (Rwanda) as a possible scenario that may befall Guyana. The two situations are not similar.

The “vultures and carrion crows” of Guyana (alias the independent media) have now evolved as birds capable of inducing unsuspecting humans to carry out mass killings. Ornithologists and biologists should be flocking to Guyana to document this quantum leap in avian intelligence.

We have not seen any evidence of such self-destructive thoughts and actions within our media personnel; and we are totally unaware of such tendencies and proclivities within Guyanese or within any subset of our population. Nothing of that scale and magnitude can remain hidden for long. It is therefore vital that the above-named government officials bring the full evidence of such planned activities to the attention of the public, security forces, international organizations like the UN and Carter Center. It is imperative that these functionaries report the details; the world is watching.   The local police force should immediately investigate such planned atrocities and take the necessary action.

It is particularly bizarre, since the other political entities encompass people (candidates and supporters) across the scale of human heritage, culture and belief. All opposition political parties have and are trying to increase the broadness of their appeals. In a democracy each vote counts as one, and genetic heritage or physical expression is not a factor.

The independent media (Kaieteur News, Stabroek News and Demerara Waves.com) have no plans to motivate ‘phantom’ squads of beings to commit odious acts of hatred and violence. Why would the media houses want to attack their own readerships? The independent media have no political base or political aspirations.

We know that no such plan of murder and mayhem exists. No sane or principled person wants such happenings here, or anywhere. In fact, ordinary Guyanese are too busy trying to survive the harsh economic landscape, official corruption and afflictions imposed upon us to be involved with such nefarious schemes.

The destruction being voiced by government officials is more likely an apocalyptic vision run amok that only unhealthy minds can conjure up and propagate with such intensity. Such bizarreness must be the act of desperate individuals. Party officials have been
proclaiming in various places such as Linden and Albion that the people (in their thousands) are embracing them and welcoming them because of the government’s splendid achievements. If this is true then they should point out who and where these ‘alien phantom people’ planning such extremes of violence are. Mr Lincoln Lewis has commented on the disturbing comparisons being made between Rwanda and Guyana in the local print media. Like Mr Lewis, many of us are not amused. The question is therefore why such horrific images are being conjured up by the PPP/C.  In this election, we see the working of devious minds.

These calls are designed to invoke an irrational fear of others, as well as arouse dormant insecurities in the majority and once-faithful PPP followers. These invocations are designed to make President Jagdeo/PPP‘s wavering supporters more anxious, so they adopt defensive positions by rallying behind the ruling PPP party.

The government knows what subliminal messages, undertones and chords are being sent out. These officials know what they are doing. The hidden associations conjured by their words are obvious to all but the naïve.

The Elections Commission and the Ethnic Relations Commission should ask the government for an explanation of these offensive statements. The religious bodies, human rights groups and citizens should call for an end to such statements. They are dangerous and counterproductive to our health and welfare.  Guyanese of all heritages have long respected the principles of non-violence as adopted and advocated by Mr M K Gandhi, Dr M L King and Mr Nelson Mandela.

It is indeed sad that the leadership of a party which once championed the cause of the underdogs without fear or favour now leads the nation down paths of destruction and disintegration.

The people must stand and say enough is enough. We are better, than what this government thinks. Let us show the ‘Champion of the Earth‘ that we are above this.

Yours faithfully,
Seelochan Beharry
