A 23-year-old colleague of mine is of the opinion that anyone who wins the elections will do the same thing that the PPP has done, which is to look after its own people. I ask myself the question: has the carrying on of the current regime left this young lady with the impression that national political life is a cycle of marginalization and reprisal? For their benefit the young people of this nation need to know that within the first decade of its term in office the PNC had shown the highest of regard for Indians by recognizing and institutionalizing their religions in this nation‘s life by making Eid-ul-Adha, Eid-Ul-Fitr, Diwali and Phagwah national holidays or national ‘holydays.‘ For me there is no greater respect that can be shown to a people than the act of showing respect to their understanding of the unseen reality. It was under the PNC too that Guyana nurtured Sir Shridath Ramphal and Dr Mohammed Shahabuddeen. It was under the PNC, that Kowsilla and company’s struggles were institutionalized in the observance of Enmore Martyrs Day. It was under the PNC that tens of thousands of Indians received a high quality education, that the laws were amended to stop the exploitation of child brides.
The PNC incorporated the Amerindians into national life. No, young people, national political life is not all about marginalization and reprisals.
