Dear Editor,
The ruling party started bottom-house meetings long before the other parties vying to rule Guyana could start their own meetings. One such meeting was held at a house on the Uitvlugt Sideline Dam, and I was coaxed by some of the residents there, to go. According to them, some Minister was coming to deal with issues affecting them, so hearing that I agreed to accompany them.
Before going I suspected that it was a political campaign, and my suspicion was correct when I heard the Regional Vice-Chairman starting to bombard the residents about the years under the PNC and of Guyana’s so-called development under the PPP/C.
During the Vice- Chairman’s speech of nonsense, Minister Jennifer Webster arrived, and party supporters signalled him to wrap up and make way for the Minister, which he reluctantly did after a few signals, but much to the annoyance of the residents.
The Minister started just like the Vice- Chairman. One would have assumed they had been listening to an old music recording and were hearing the remix.
Editor, I have been working in the media for a number of years and whilst working I was privileged to travel to a lot of places in Guyana, and would always hear people complaining of roads, water, lights, telephones, etc. Sure enough at the end of the meeting all those issues were raised and the Minister promised to look into some of the matters.
The Minister also informed the residents that some time in the next week the dam will be redone, but the residents told her that the dam had been in existence for over 50 years and they always heard the same thing.
She then showed a paper saying that the contract was signed and it would be done, which is over 2-3months ago.
To date the dam is still not done and given the ruling party‘s track record, one hopes that this is not because of a lack of probity.
Yours faithfully,
Sahadeo Bates
