Cook accused of stealing hospital camera

A man yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Naresh Persaud, 33, of Anna Regina allegedly stole a camera worth $45,000, from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on October 27.

The court was told that on the day in question, Persaud was found in the x-ray department of the hospital at around 6:30hrs by a security officer and a search was carried out on his person and the said camera was found.

In his defence, the defendant told the court that he was a cook in the interior and came out on Monday night with malaria and he went to the institution and was told that the Malaria Department does not open until 08:00hrs. he said he went to the x-ray department and slept and a staff member found him and questioned him and later took him to the security outpost. They never found the camera on him, he said.

The magistrate refused Persaud’s bail application and remanded him to prison until November 3, when he will make his next court appearance.
