Cellink Berbice made a winning start to this year’s Inter-County Under-17 tournament with a solid half century from Shemroy Hetmyer at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground yesterday.
They defeated Essequibo by six wickets and 18.3 overs to spare after there was a delayed start. Essequibo, batting first, made a paltry 123-9 from 45 overs with Devon George and Kamo Paul being the principal scorers with 27 and 24 respectively.
Sharazz Ramcharran and national youth pacer Niall Smith had the best bowling figures of 2-17 (9) and 2-32 (6) while Shailendra Shameer and Arif Chan supported with one wicket apiece.
In reply, Cellink Berbice knocked off the target in 26.3 overs and ended with 125-4. Hetmyer stroked eight fours and five sixes in his top score of 68 while Nicholas Cameron contributed 16.
The not out batsmen were Chan and Shameer with 14 and eight.
Kean Harry (1-8) and Ricardo Peters (1-30) were the wicket takers. Berbice will take on the Rest Team on Monday.
