New York-based Golden Jaguars Kevin Beaton and Devon Millington will have a chance to showcase their skills at a higher level for the Caribbean All Stars against top United States Soccer League (USL) Club FC New York in an exhibition game today.
The two forwards were selected for the Regional team based on their outstanding performances for Team Guyana in the New York Digicel Caribbean Cup held during the summer.
Two other Jaguars members Howard Lowe and Abassy McPherson were down for selection for the All Stars, but are unavailable.
Twenty-year-old Beaton had a dream debut year for Team Guyana topping the goal scoring list, in the process slamming home two hat-tricks. Team Guyana played unbeaten in the Digicel Cup to reach the final against Team Grenada.
That game ended in dispute and was abandoned after a fight between members of both teams.
Beaton was subsequently called up for and played in the Jaguars’ 2-1 victory over India in the exhibition clash at the Providence Stadium in September.
Millington also had a successful first season with Team Guyana after holding down a regular place in the Jaguars team which reached the Finals of the Caribbean Football Union’s Digicel Cup held in Martinique.
The two selected Guyanese will join forces with other top New York-based Caribbean players including Trinidadians Marcus Morris, son of the famous Strike Squad player Michael Morris, and Kevaughn Connell.
The game will also give the Guyanese a chance to catch the eyes of scouts for tryouts for fulltime professional contracts with clubs in the United States
FC New York finished fifth in the Atlantic Division of the USL’s Pro League which is the second tier of competition below Major League Soccer (MLS)in the United States.
They won two games in the MLS Cup, which is the knockout version of the FA Cup in England.
This evening’s match-up will have historic significance as it is the first time a Caribbean All Stars team will lace up boots for any official game in New York City.
It will be played at the Metropolitan Oval in Ridgewood, Queens from 8 p.m.
The game is a charity event to highlight breast cancer awareness month and is being hosted by F.C. New York which is joining a number of other sports organizations around the United States, staging activities to mark the 25th anniversary the occasion.
