Alexis Williams helped the Natural Sciences faculty in a major way by winning the 400, 800, 1500 and 3000-metre races at the University of Guyana’s annual Inter Faculty track and field championships yesterday at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground, Thomas Lands.
However, up to press time the final points standings were unknown and the official total will be made available on Monday.
However 2009 winners Social Sciences and defending champions, Health Science should be the front runners.
Williams, who won a silver medal in the 3000-metre event at the recent Inter Guiana Games in Suriname, swept her four races by totally dominating her competitors.
She started off by winning the 3000 metres race in fine style lapping the second place finisher on two occasions in the seven and a half lap event.
Tiana Badley and Reveena Mangal trotted in second and third respectively.
Williams was so dominant at yesterday’s championships that no one seemed to notice the upset of Treiston Joseph in the male 100 metres.
Joseph, a first year Communications student lost the featured race to Drexel Noble.
Former Queen’s College student Noble, of Natural Sciences (NS) won 100 metre in a time of 10.7 seconds ahead of Social Sciences (SS) Joseph (11.0) and SS Ian Campbell (11.3).
The female 100 metre was won by SS Christy Campbell followed by Tiffany King and Tiana Badley respectively. Campbell also won the female high jump event.
Elton Bollers (SS) turned in a blistering performance in the male 200 metre registering a winning time and his personal best time of 21.4 seconds. Bollers won ahead of Carlwyn Collins (NS) who was second in a time of 22.4 seconds. Campbell was again the third place finisher registering 23.18s.
Collins would however take his revenge on Bollers in the 400 metres.
Collins, who is a one lap specialist, won the quarter mile event in a time of 50.2 seconds beating into second place Neil Barry Jr.
Bollers, who cited fatigue, finished in sixth place.
Donnette Nicholson and Dreylan Johnson both of School of Earth and Environmental Sciences were second and third place finishers in the female 400 metre event respectively.
Last year’s champion boy Stephan Josiah of Health Sciences won the male 5000 metre event in a time of 18 minutes and 51 seconds ahead of Muneshwar Rashdarie and Edwin Moore the second and third place finishers.
The male 800 metre race was won by Karl Vanier while the 1500 metre male event was won by Danu Johnson of the Berbice Campus beating Josiah in to second place; Moore was again the third place finisher.
Double Gold medalist at the IGG games for the High Jump Carlon Pitt, leapt away with the male high jump first place trophy. A. Victor of HS won the male discus event while NS Lawanda Whaul was the winner of the female discus.
K.Spelling had a winning throw of 10 metres, 55 centimetre to walk away with the male shot put title while a throw of seven metres and 57 centimetres was good enough to earn Vinnetta Horry the female shot put title.
