The Mangrove Reserve Women Agriculture Producers (MRWAP) will hold the first ever Farmers Market Under the Trees today, as part of Agriculture Month, at the mangrove visitor centre at Cove and John East Coast Demerara.
According to a press release, Chairperson of the Guyana Mangrove Restora-tion Project (GMRP) Annette Arjoon-Martins said the farmers market will be the GMRP’s final activity for Agriculture Month.
Visitors can grab the opportunity to purchase the local produce that would be displayed for sale including mangrove honey, handmade beeswax candles, sourie archar, cassava bread, green seasoning, pepper sauce and tamarind balls.
They can also choose from a variety of fresh fruits juices including soursop, pineapple, sugar cane and water coconuts that would be on sale. Traditional Guyanese breakfasts will be on sale also, to be enjoyed at tables under the mango trees on the property.
According to the press release, the event is part of the alternative livelihood component of the GMRP funded by the government and the European Union and is sponsored by Digicel.
The event is scheduled to commence at 10 am with live entertainment by the Buxton Pride Steelband. Admission is free.
