Cheddi ‘Joey’ Jagan Jr., who has joined the civic component of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), says the PPP is the only party that can bring real change.
He told supporters at a public meeting at Port Mourant yesterday that he “came home to the civic” to bring betterment to the country and he was not looking for any position, money or title after the elections.
A lot of people fought for “Jagan legacy” which “wasn’t the PPP alone but the civic.” He said Moses Nagamootoo, who recently resigned from the party, was using “historical references to enhance himself…” but his father, the late President Cheddi Jagan who was the “greatest man to ever occupy this land” was for the people.
His father, he said “spoke of self-sufficiency, self-help and self-reliance and those are the things we have to fight for in this country.” He said this was a critical time and urged everyone to go out and vote for the PPP.
He told them that “Joey is here and Joey got his own mind. Joey is not a yes man.” He promised to return to the area and find out what the problems are and bring it to the attention of presidential candidate Donald Ramotar.
The meeting was held simultaneously with the AFC rally at Whim. He admitted that he was a critic of the smaller things in the government and said that Ramotar has assured him that he would bring change. The PPP is the only party that can bring real change.
He spoke of the changes that were already taking place like the Berbice River Bridge as well as the Skeldon Sugar Factory which he noted has problems but said they can be fixed.
He acknowledged that better educational opportunities are needed as well as jobs in the area. He said that was why he had his own vision for the development of the beach in the No. 64 Village area for all Guyanese and persons from places like Brazil to visit.
A surprise speaker at the meeting was former member of the AFC, Gaumattie Singh who spoke of the hard work she did for that party and was not given the seat in parliament as promised.
She also accused the AFC of being deceitful and dishonest and said the egos of the leaders are “bigger than the circumference of this earth.” Singh said too that “they want to be president of this country and they can’t run their own party.” She endorsed the PPP and urged persons to vote for the cup again.
Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy also addressed the gathering.
