Corriverton painter Clifford Carter, who set himself on fire on Sunday, is now clinging to life at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Carter, called ‘Chino,’ suffered third degree burns over 70% of his body as a result of the incident, which stemmed from a dispute with his wife, Halima, to whom he has been married for 14 years.
As a result of the dispute, Carter, alone at their Lot 34 A Princetown, Corriverton home, doused his body with gasoline and then lit himself on fire.
He was rescued by neighbours who heard his screams and took him to the Skeldon Public Hospital. He was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient.
At the hospital’s male surgical ward, Carter was receiving oxygen as well as an intravenous infusion. “I allowed the devil to take over. I don’t go to church. I don’t read my bible as I should, and now I have to stand this pain. All over me burning, just look eh… I did not think of my children. I hope they forgive me,’ he said.
