Guyanese Warren ‘40’ McKay of Team Trek pedaled away from defending champion Phillip Clarke in an exciting sprint to the finish to win the Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) Cycling Federation’s third annual Leslie King Memorial Race, which ended at the BP Sporting Complex in Mayaro on Sunday.
McKay completed the 50-mile course in a time of 2:21:28 while his teammates Gene Samuel and Colin Wilson shared third and fourth respectively.
In other results, Degree Madonna Wheelers’ Roger Smart got the better of Sonics’ Ancil Roberts to claim the Over-40 division and Humming Bird’s Peter
Hernandez took the Over-60 category by edging Rafmon’s Earl McLeod. Among the juniors, Parkside’s Justin Roberts outshone Sonics’ Akiel Campbell and Samuel Alleyne, while Heatwave’s Alexandra Constance upstaged Guyanese Amanda Singh for the ladies crown.
Urba Bournes (Juveniles) and South Claine’s Raymond Belmontes (Tinymites) were the day’s other winners.
King, highly regarded as one of T&T’s best-ever track cyclists, passed away at age 59 last October after suffering a stroke while travelling with the T&T cycling team in Venezuela. He represented the country at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and the 1972 Munich Games in Germany and also won Commonwealth silver in the match sprint event in 1970.
