A taxi driver who allegedly robbed two female passengers at gunpoint while they were heading home from the ‘All Black’ party appeared yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer the charge before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell.
The charge read that on October 30, while being armed with a gun, Charles Finlayson, 24, robbed Judy Stewart of a gold chain worth $30,000 and $6,000 cash and Joylyn Bailey of a cell phone worth $9,000 and $2,500 cash. He was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
It was stated in court that on the day in question at 03:30hrs, Stewart and Bailey were at the ‘All Black’ party on Carifesta Avenue and they joined the defendant’s taxi to travel to the East Coast of Demerara. He had another male in his taxi and told the women that he had to pick up his girlfriend and then he drove up Woolford Avenue, where he pointed a gun at them and the other male began relieving them of the articles and cash, while assaulting them.
The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the prevalence of the offence and he argued that if granted bail the defendant may not return to court.
The magistrate then remanded the man until tomorrow.
