Alexis Williams contributed 40 points to help Natural Sciences run away with the University of Guyana (UG) Inter-faculty Sports championship last Friday at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Sports Ground, Camp Ayanganna.
The official results of the sports were released on Monday, showing Natural Sciences accumulating a total of 222 points for the victory to leave Social Sciences in second and Health Sciences in third with 162 and 145 points respectively.
Williams, a silver medallist at the recently-concluded Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) in Suriname took part in the 400, 800, 1500 and 300 metres, winning all of her events.
“It was an ok performance for me. I didn’t run any of my personal best times in none of my events so I can’t say it was an excellent performance but at least it was good enough to help my faculty win,” Williams told Stabroek Sport via telephone. The 19-year-old who started training with the Police Sports Club earlier this year after being the champion girl at UG sports last year has made great strides in her athletics career.
She is now looking forward to a possible podium finish in the South American 10k road race which has been postponed from October 23 to a date yet to be announced.
“Well after UG sports I’m just looking to space high in the South American 10k before my season ends,” Williams commented.
With her season close to ending, Stabroek Sport also asked Williams about her plans for next year.
“Well I’m just looking to open my season successfully and to make more teams for Guyana and while I want to reach as far as the Olympics, I want to compete against other opponents first before moving to that level,” Williams said.
Natural Sciences has now taken over the championship from Health Sciences and will look to defend it successfully next year with their influx of new running stars.
