A driver who allegedly struck down and killed a 20-year-old woman on the Annandale Public Road appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Sewbarran Nirmal, 46, of Cane Grove, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara was later granted $1 million bail by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin.
It is allegedly that on October 27 last, Nirmal drove his car, PNN 2951, in a dangerous manner thereby causing the death of Shafeena Imran. According to reports, Imran was heading in an easterly direction along the roadway when the car, which was heading west, slammed into her just before 11 am. The woman was pitched several feet on impact and landed on the roadway.
Her umbrella, cell phone and slippers flew in different directions.
Residents told Stabroek News at the scene that because of the speed the car was moving at, the driver took some time to slow down before eventually coming to a stop. Imran, who was gasping for air, was later taken to the hospital by the police and immediately rushed to the theatre for emergency surgery, but subsequently died.
Police accompanied the driver to the Vigilance Police Station. The case will be called again on October 31.
