A 33-year-old Tucville resident who allegedly had 61.1 grammes of cocaine in his possession in the Cuyuni for the purpose of trafficking was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.
The court was told that the accused Mark Bess who was not required to plead to the indictable charge allegedly had 61.1 grammes of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the facts presented to the court by Prosecutor Luckhai Jairam, on the day in question at approximately 16:30 hrs police officers from the Eteringbang Police Station were conducting a patrol at the Dacari Landing in the Cuyuni River when they observed the defendant acting in a suspicious manner. He was approached and a search was carried out on his person and in the room in which he was staying when the drug suspected to be cocaine was discovered under his mattress. The man was told of the allegation and taken to the police station where the suspected cocaine was weighed in his presence and it amounted to 61.1 grammes.
The prosecution objected to bail, stating that no special circumstance was presented to the court by the defendant.
The matter was transferred to the Kamarang Magistrates’ Court where it will be called again on December 19.
