Moses Nagamootoo on Wednesday stopped short of saying that he could “deliver” Region 6 for the AFC, but emphasised his belief that Berbicians will listen to his “message.”
“I am not a deliverer. I am just a messenger,” he said. “I have taken the message to Berbice and I am saying with confidence that that message is not going to fall on barren ears. Berbicians are very resourceful people, they are very wise. They listen, they learn and then they act and I am sure they understand the language of using a key to open up opportunities for themselves,” Nagamootoo said while responding to a question at an AFC news briefing.
Nagamootoo identified piracy, violence, meagre pensions, harassment by the inland revenue department, violence, and the inability to access tertiary education as some of the issues of concern to Berbice residents at the moment.
There appears to be a tussle is in the making between the incumbent PPP/C and the Nagamootoo-endowed AFC for political momentum in Region 6, a traditional PPP stronghold.
On Sunday, both the ruling PPP/C and the AFC held political meetings on the Corentyne—the first time so far in the election campaign that two major parties had held rallies in the same area on the same day.
AFC presidential candidate Khemraj Ramjattan said that with Nagamootoo onboard, the AFC would make significant inroads in Region 6. However, PPP/C campaign spokesperson Robert Persaud told Stabroek News that the incumbent party is not afraid of the AFC or Nagamootoo. “Nagamootoo nor AFC is a threat to the PPP/C in Berbice or any part of the country,” he said.
