Ex-policeman Otis Grant who was arrested on Tuesday night in connection with the murder of 72-year-old Clementine Fiedtkou-Parris remains in police custody.
His lawyer, Glen Hanoman, told Stabroek News yesterday that the police are continuing investigations.
He expressed the view that there is no evidence against his client that could lead to a charge. “I don’t expect charges,” he said, pointing out that he expects the police to hold Grant for the full 72 hours which will end on Friday night and then release him on bail.
Around 7.30 pm on Tuesday, in the company of Hanoman, Grant went to the CID Headquarters, Eve Leary where he was detained. The man had gone to the police after hearing that the ranks were earlier at his Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara home asking for him. He also learnt that he was being fingered in the June 30 murder of the elderly woman and immediately contacted his lawyer.
Subsequent investigations by police led to the discovery of a .22 rifle in a building under construction not far from Grant’s home.
Two men had gone to Fiedtkou-Parris’ Robb Street home asking for her. They later pumped six bullets into her as she walked out of her bedroom towards them.
A property dispute was said to be the motive for the killing.
So far four men have been charged with her murder.
