Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a Plaisance man charged with armed robbery, after he pleaded not guilty when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
The court heard that on November 5, Travis Patterson, 26, of Lot 6 Bowman Street, Plaisance, being armed with a gun, allegedly robbed Natasha Mahes of one gold chain, a gold band and cash, valuing $430,000 in total. He pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question, around 11pm, Mahes was at the Square of the Revolution with a companion when the accused and an accomplice, in motor car PKK 592, allegedly approached her. He said the defendant came out of the vehicle and allegedly held the woman at gunpoint while he demanded the items stated in the charge.
Patterson then allegedly got into the car and his accomplice drove off. Mahes promptly raised an alarm and public-spirited citizens gave chase. Mahes’ companion also gave chase in his car, resulting in the driver, who was transporting Patterson, losing control of his vehicle and careening off the road.
In the process of escaping, the men jumped out of the vehicle and as they ran off the accused allegedly fired shots at the Mahes. The driver of the vehicle made good his escape; however, the defendant was apprehended and handed over to police. The prosecutor told the court that the Mahes positively identified Patterson as her attacker.
Patterson was ordered to return to court on November 17.
