The winner of the local spelling bee competition yesterday left Guyana for the island of St Kitts, where she will participate today in the Caribbean spelling bee competition.
When Stabroek News caught up with little Renee Bisnauth, the nine-year-old Berbician who attends Cropper Primary School, in Guyana Telephone and Telegraph’s (GT&T) cafeteria, she expressed delight at being able to represent her country. “I am very confident that I will do my sponsors and my country proud,” she said.
She added that she was excited because her mother was accompanying her on the three-day trip, which would also include site seeing.
Donna Bisnauth, who also appeared jubilant, informed that she was too was confident that her daughter would do her country proud. She expressed appreciation to the phone company for contributing to her daughter’s success locally and participating in the regional event.
Renee’s mother explained that being the avid reader her daughter is she does not have to tutor her much, since she not only reads on her own but also practices. The child makes use of computer resources given and is always quick to ask her older siblings for assistance should the need arise.
The 2011 Regional Haliborange Spelling Bee Competition will be held at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s (ECCB) centre in St Kitts commencing at 10 am.
There will be two rounds with a ten-minute intermission between each round. Each participant will be given twenty words to spell; ten words per round.
Spellers will have two minutes to complete the full spelling of the word and all words will be sourced from the Oxford English Dictionary. A total of five points will be awarded for each word spelled correctly and the person accumulating the most points at the end of both rounds will be adjudged winner.
