Zoo’s lioness dies

The National Parks Commission yesterday announced the death of the Guyana Zoological Park’s lioness, which was found dead in its cage on Thursday morning.

According to a press release sent by the Commission, the “much loved lioness” was 22-years-old at the time of her death. The release stated the cat was very engaging with people and that despite being one of the oldest cats at the zoo, “she seemed to interact [with] and appreciate humans, both zoo workers and visitors alike.”

The now empty cage which once housed the lioness at the Guyana Zoological Park.

After the lioness was found on Thursday by zoo staff, the release said, veterinarians were immediately called in, which led to the animal’s body parts being sent for analysis “in an effort to determine the cause of death.”
When Stabroek News visited the almost desolate zoo, the cages that once housed the lion, lioness, puma and other species of the cat family were all empty.

Efforts made to contact Yolanda Vasconcellos from the National Parks Commission for further comment on the issue proved futile.
