Six Caribbean poets from the Toronto/Southern Ontario region have come together and published an anthology titled Roraima.
According to a press release, the anthology comprises 75 poems and “breaks news ground in exposing a vision of Caribbean writing that goes beyond wallowing in nostalgia about former lives in Guyana, Trinidad and other parts of the Caribbean.”
The poets are Harry Persaud, a retired anthropologist; Ram Jagessar, a retired newspaper editor; Habeeb Alli, a Muslim imam; Naraine Datt, a retired school teacher and realtor; Roop Misir and Ken Ramphal.
Roraima is a rich and varied collection of poems on many aspects of life in Canada and the perspectives of former immigrants who have adapted to life in a large, different and developed nation, the release said.
The poets are expected to start, within the next few weeks, a blitz of publicity, public appearances and readings, along with a book launch.
