Two international medical students were robbed at gunpoint on Friday night and swift action by an off-duty policeman and residents led to the capture of four suspects and the recovery of the loot.
Police said in a press release yesterday that around 19:30 hrs Kalai Rajan and Ragharendra Balakrishnan both 24 years old, were on their way home along First Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, when they were attacked and held at gunpoint by four men, one of whom was armed with a firearm.
The police press release said the two are medical doctors but Stabroek News has since learnt that they are Indian nationals pursuing medical studies here.
The release said that during the attack the perpetrators took away two cell phones and a wallet from the victims and escaped.
An alarm was raised and an off-duty policeman and residents gave chase during which one of the suspects was arrested. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of three other suspects and the recovery of the two cell phones and the wallet.
A toy pistol was recovered at the scene, according to release.
The four suspects were in custody up to press time last evening.
