In front of a reasonable-sized crowd at Burnham Court on Saturday night, all teams made strong cases for the top prize in the Guinness Greatest of the Street football competition with eight exciting match-ups.
Beterverwagting (BV) and East La Penitence set the scene for the rest of the evening in the opening two games. BV’s Delroy Dean, a familiar name in the Sport Ministry’s 7:15 Inter-Block tournament, broke the nil-all deadlock over Norton Street in the 25th minute of the game.
East La Penitence made light work of Plaisance, defeating them 4-1. Sheldon Edwards netted a double in the 5th and 8th minutes while Dennis Edwards (15th) and Marlon Chalmers (25th) supported with one goal each; Carlos Matthews scored the consolation goal for the East Coast side in the 10th minute.
Leopold Street also recorded an easy 3-0 victory over Castello Housing Scheme with Omalo Williams, Rawle Audain and Kenny Fraser scoring in the 8th, 10th and 20th minutes respectively. Alexander Village edged past Rasville 2-1 in the fourth game of the night.
Dellon Williams opened the scoring for Alexander Village in the 5th minute and was followed by Leon Yaw a minute after; Godfrey Parris pulled back one for Rasville in the 11th minute. Deon Alfred, of Queen Street, Tiger Bay, was the only goal scorer in his team’s game with Kitty.
The same was the case in game six when defending champion Broad Street’s Jimmy Gravesande, the captain, scored in the 6th minute against Laing Avenue. Tiger Bay’s other team got a walkover from Buxton after the team failed to show.
In an anti-climactic end to the night Lodge Housing Scheme and Globe Yard played to a 2-all draw. Globe Yard’s Aubrey Clarke drew first blood in the 8th minute before his teammate Jamal Harlequin followed up in the 11th minute. Lodge Scheme responded with goals from Leon Roberts and Kerwin Bethune in the 17th and 19th minutes.
