Kolkata, India — West Indies captain Darren Sammy offered condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in the tragic accident in his native St Lucia last Thursday. Speaking yesterday ahead of the second Test match against India, Sammy took time out before addressing cricket matters to pay his respects to those who lost their lives.
“I want to take time out on behalf of the team to send my condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of those persons who died in what was a horrific accident back home in St Lucia. The persons who died came from a community near to where I was born and grew up so I knew most of them very well. It is a sad time for me and the whole of St Lucia,” Sammy said.
“Being a positive person, I intend to use this as a motivation to go out there to play well. If there is one thing that could bring a smile in such times is to see a West Indies team win.”
Reports have indicated that 17 persons, including children from the village of Dugard, lost their lives when the bus in which they were travelling went over a cliff and into the sea.
Sammy is the first and only St Lucian to play Test cricket for the West Indies.
