(De Ware Tijd) NIEUW NICKERIE – Yesterday evening, an enormous fire reduced two businesses on the corner of Emma- and Maynardstraat to ashes. The fire started around 8:30 p.m. in the building next to India Bazaar at Maynardstraat. That building and that of Seela’s CV burned down completely. The two top floors of nearby Pak Hap hotel and restaurant were heavily damaged. Nickerie’s fire brigade made every effort to prevent other buildings from burning down, and assistance was called in from colleagues from Coronie. Less than a week ago, another fire claimed four residences, but at that time, the fire brigade did not have sufficient water available to bring the fire under control, much to the dismay of the Nickerie community. This time, water was pumped from the nearby Nickerie River.
