As the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the treason matter against Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Major Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol Ann Munroe, and ex-soldier Leonard Wharton continued yesterday, Lieutenant Colonel Sydney James was further cross-examined by attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes and was re-examined by Shalimar Ali-Hack, Director of Public Prosecutions.
The PI is being heard by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and will be called again on November 22.
Wharton, a reservist in the Guyana Defence Force; Munroe, a serving major in the army, and his wife Carol-Ann Munroe, were on December 27 last, arrested and charged with conspiracy for treason.
Between December 1 and 16, 2009, at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, the three accused allegedly plotted to level war within Guyana to force the President out of office in order to compel the government to change its measures.
The trio made their first court appearance on December 28, 2010. Treason is a capital offence and it is not bailable.
