Goals from Captain Kenwyne Jones and Slovakia-based wing/forward Lester Peltier in the 59th and 65th minute respectively, propelled Trinidad & Tobago to a consolation 2-0 over Guyana, in the final Group B 2014 World Cup Qualifier, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, last evening.
With the result of the match being inconsequential given Guyana’s victory at Providence on Friday to secure a place in the third round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, the home side was basically playing for pride in front of their home fans.
Guyana rested some of their senior players from the victorious side on Friday such as Carl Cort, Gregory Richardson, Captain Chris Nurse and Kayode McKinnon and replaced them with Anthony Benfield, Dwight Peters, Vurlon Mills (the leading Guyana goal-scorer in qualifying) and Travis G
rant.
Trinidad most significantly lost their main mid-fielder Chris Birchall due to a club commitment and made three changes from the side defeated in Guyana.
The third round which is scheduled to run from June 8th – September 15th 2012, will see Guyana facing CONCACAF powerhouses Mexico, Costa Rica and El Salvador in home and away matches.
