North Essequibo Warriors and Hotel Tower West Demerara Cavaliers secured wins in the opening round of the Essequibo Zone in the nationwide 11-team Carib/Pepsi Twenty20 Big Smash competition at the Anna Regina Community Center Ground on Sunday.
In the first game, Hotel Tower West Demerara Cavaliers defeated North Essequibo Warriors by 28 runs. Batting first, the Cavaliers were restricted to 94/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Ishwar Singh scored 14 while Guyana Under-19 left-arm spinner Anthony Adams (3 for 8) and Jason Heyliger 2/10 were the main wicket-takers for the smashers.
The Cavaliers bowlers fought back, thanks to current and past Guyana national players Paul Wintz and Mahendra Nagamootoo claiming 3/9 and 2/10 respectively, dismissing North Essequibo for 66. Budhan Baksh 3/8 also was among the wickets.
The Warriors in the day’s second encounter, recovered from the early loss to topple South Essequibo Smashers by 58 runs.
Taking first strike, the Warriors amassed 148/5 in 20 overs. Anthony Adams (24), Kevon Boodie (21) and Delon Heyliger (19) were the principal scorers.
Bowling for the Smashers, Roy Fredericks claimed 2 for 25.
In reply the Smashers were bowled out for a paltry 90 in 15.1 overs. Herrel Green (19) was the only significant scorer, as the Warriors bowling led by Ricardo Adams (3-19) and two wickets a piece for Delon Heyliger, Jason Heyliger, and Anthony Adams combined to rout the opposition.
