De Nobrega is Carlton Wheeler track champ

Seventeen-year-old Paul De Nobrega is this year’s winner of the Carlton Wheeler Track Meet. He finished ahead of Orville Hinds and Albert Philander in the open group, which is also the main event.

Hinds and Philander finished second and third respectively. Sunday’s meet was the ninth staging of the event and it was held at the Everest Cricket Ground.

De Nobrega also set a record with his six wins and one third place finish. The teen won two junior races, Category 3 and 4, Devil takes the Hindmost along with the open group and the junior/juveniles category.

His third place finish was in the second category 3 to 4 race. He finished behind Albert Philander and Orville Hinds.

National Coach and Organiser Hassan Mohamed said that in previous years two first place finishes were the most secured by any cyclist at the event.

He said that he was satisfied with the meet as it was a success despite the small crowd. The cyclists, he said, performed to their best.

Most of the cyclists who competed yesterday were a part of the ‘Teach Them Young Cycle Programme’, Mohamed said.

Twenty-nine events were organized on Sunday.
