A Queen’s College (QC) team led Guyana to victory, defeating the Turks and Caicos Islands at the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute’s (CFNI) 14th annual Food and Nutrition Quiz held at the Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday.
Eleven countries participated in the preliminary rounds including Antigua, Jamaica, St Kitts and other Caribbean and Central American schools, from October 18-19 via audio conference facilities provided by the University Open Campus.
At the finals, over 16 schools were represented in the audience where Guyana won with 360 points leading the Turks and Caicos by a whopping 140 points. However, Dixie Smith, of the Turks and Caicos Island was named the Most Valuable Player while Guyana’s Benita Rushana Davis was named the Individual Champion and Renee Wilson of the Bishops’ College in Carriacou Grenada was named the runner-up Individual Champion.
The Guyana comprised QC students Rosanna Sarika Bisnauth, Shafali Valeska Milton, Rehana Thomas and Davis. While Smith, Nia Jones, Zavia Jarrett and Abigail Williams from the HJ Robinson High School made up the Turks and Caicos Islands team.
The annual competition is organized by CFNI in collaboration with its partners in the health and education ministries in the region. The Guyana team won a trip to Jamaica while the second and third place finishers will receive cash prizes, medals, trophies and books.
The goal of the competition is to expose students to keen and intense rivalry among secondary students while assisting them with reparations for regional and national examinations and promoting healthy lifestyles.
