The University of Guyana’s inaugural scrabble competition started this week and Julian Cadogan, Makeisha Archer, Lorraine Carter and Alicia Pollard all took first round victories in the senior common room of the university.
The competition which is being played in two categories, male and female, saw Cadogan of Natural Sciences defeating Mark Archer, a UG staff member. Cadogan scored 344 points while Charles secured 261.
For the females Makeisha Archer ended the first round on 302 points with opponent Ramona Numes scoring 232 points. Both students are in the Faculty of Health Science.
In the second match Health Science student Lorraine Carter defeated Julie Richmond by 149 points, Carter scored 349 points.
The final match saw Pollard ending on 283 points over Krystle Dazzell’s 242 points.
Sports Coordinator Lavern Fraser-Thomas said that the university is looking to crown a scrabble king and queen. She also said that fifteen persons comprising two staff members and thirteen students are contesting the tournament, with each faculty being represented.
According to Fraser-Thomas the competition is being played in double loss format, which ensures that each player gets a chance at playing twice.
The sports coordinator said since this is the inaugural competition then it will not be following all the rules of the game as most of the players are accustomed to playing among family and friends where the rules are sometimes different.
The competition, she said, is being held in the interest of starting a scrabble club, which will eventually see the university competing nationally and internationally.
