The final round of group stage matches in the 2011 Guinness-in-the-Streets football tournament concluded last evening at the East Ruimveldt Community Centre, with Alexander Village and East Front Road progressing to the round of 16 stage of the competition.
In the Group A encounter, Alexander Village (AV) defeated Kingston 5-3 in an attacking football match.
The trend for this open game, commenced when with just 9 seconds gone, Sheldon Gorrick open the scoring for AV. Gorrick scored again in the sixth minute to make 2-0, before two more from striker Shem Porter in the 7th and 9th minutes made it 4-0 for the village side at the end of the first half.
After the half AV took their foot off the gas and conceded two quick penalties in the 10th and 12th minutes, that Nigel Denny scored, to create hopes of fight back for the Kingston side.
However, Gorrick crushed those hopes soon after, when he completed his hat-trick in the 13th minute with a hard low shot from the half-way line. Denny scored one more penalty in the 14th minute, but it was too late. AV’s win took them to the top of Group A, unbeaten with nine points after three games.
Game 2 saw the last placed Group B side – Buxton – registering a 2-1 win over Group B leader East Front Road.
Sherwin Griffith scored twice in the 6th and 8th minutes for Buxton while Mark Hart scored the lone brace for East Front Road.
The victory was insignificant for Buxton has finished in the bottom of Group B with three points, while East Front Road had six points.
Teams placing first, second, third and fourth received cash awards of $30,000; $25,000; $20,000 and $15,000.
The other scheduled games of the night between D’Urban Street vs Laing Avenue, Norton Street vs Charlestown, Albouystown A vs Beterverwagting, West Back Road vs Leopold Street and Castello Housing Scheme vs Albouystown B were still being played.
