Seanden David-Longe and Krystal Sukra were the first two title winners of the day, yesterday, respectively copping the champion titles of the boys’ and girls’ 18 and under category when play in the Pegasus Open tennis tournament continued at the courts of the Pegasus Hotel.
David-Longe overwhelmed 2010 boys 14 and under champion Khalif Gobin, and took him down 6-3, 6-2.
In defence of her title, Sukra once again found herself coming up against Nicola Ramdyhan, in a replay of the 2010 girls’ 18 and under finals. With her strong ground strokes, Sukra rose to an easy 6-2 win of the first set, while Ramdyhan opened strong in the second set and rose to a 4-0 lead. But it was downhill from there for Ramdyhan, as Sukra wrapped up the set 6-4.
Ramdyhan was expected to later yesterday battle it out with Shawna Gentle for a spot in the ladies’ singles finals. The other ladies’ semi finals of the day was also expected to see defending champion Carol Humphrey come up against Aretta Dey to earn her way into the finals.
In other matches scheduled for yesterday Andre Lopes and Rudy Grant were expected to face off in a men’s 35 and over semi finals. In the men’s singles semi finals defending champion Jeremy Miller was paired with Gavin Lewis, while last year’s second place finisher Phillip Squires was up against Leyland Leacock.
Meanwhile, Friday’s matches featured a reclaim of the mixed doubles title by defending champions Jeremy Miller and partner Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan who defeated Phillip Squires and Krystal Sukra 6-3, 6-4. Ramdyhan/Miller had to scrape pass Shawna Gentle/Gavin Lewis in the semi-finals and Squires/Sukra had to come from a set down to defeat Aruna Ramrattan/Leyland Leacock in their semi-final encounter.
In the men’s 35 and over doubles, Carlos Adams and Andre Lopes were crowned champions after pasting Berbicians Mario Niamatalli and Anthony Ameerally 6-1, 6-1.
Losing semi-finalists in the men’s 35 and over doubles category Godfrey Lowden and Omar Persaud exacted some revenge when they breezed to a 6-2 6-0 victory over Steve David-Longe and Albert Madramootoo to capture the 45 and over Doubles title.
Matches in the tourney are scheduled to continue today when the ladies final is expected to play out, while a men’s doubles semi final between Jeremy Miller and Jason Andrews against Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes will play out followed by the other men’s doubles semis which will see Godfrey Lowden and Phillip Squires talking on Leyland Leacock and Gilbert Barckoy.
