The Demerara Lioness and Lions Club hosted its annual Health Fair to mark World Diabetes Day recently on the lawns of the round-about in front of Muneshwer’s on Water Street.
In a press release, the group said 38 persons were tested for HIV, 56 persons checked their blood group, 99 persons tested their blood sugar and blood pressure, 35 persons found out their body mass index and over 90 persons accessed information on Tuberculosis, family planning and HIV and AIDS. Participants were also given free medications compliments of Twins Manufacturing, Pharmagen Enterprises, Mike’s Pharmacy, Sudeens Enterprises, SMS Pharmaceuticals and the Medicine Chest. Some of the medication provided were Tussadryl, anti-fungal powder, pain killers and pain rubs.
The fair was organised in collaboration with the Chronic Disease Unit, the Food Policy Division, the National AIDS Programme Secretariat, the National TB Programme and the National Public Reference Laboratory, all of which are departments of the Ministry of Health. The United Nations Population Fund – Youth Advisory Group also collaborated with the Club to help it execute its programmes, the release said.
The Club said it hosts the fair annually to support the efforts of local health agencies. This year, the main organiser of the fair was Sight Conservation, the Health and Environment Committee under the guidance and chairmanship of Mark Ross. The Club also hosts a monthly blood pressure and blood sugar clinic on Regent Street in front of the George Sookhoo Store obliquely opposite the City Mall. The tests are all done free of cost.
